  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter (for laminating)
  • 7 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • Optional toppings: fruit preserves, fresh berries, sliced almonds

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. In another bowl, combine warm milk and yeast; let sit until foamy.
  2. Add egg and yeast mixture to dry ingredients. Knead until smooth and chill the dough for 30 minutes.
  3. Shape cold butter into an 8-inch square using parchment paper and chill again.
  4. Roll dough into a square, place butter in the center, fold corners over it and roll out into a rectangle. Repeat folding process twice more with chilling in between each step.
  5. Roll final dough to 1/4-inch thickness, cut into squares, fill with cream cheese mixture, shape as desired.
  6. Allow shaped danishes to rise for 1 hour while preheating oven to 390°F (200°C). Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
