  • ½ cup ice water

  • ½ cup brown sugar (for toffee sauce)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (for toffee sauce)
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch (for toffee sauce)
  • 1 egg (for custard topping)
  • 1 tbsp water (for custard topping)
  • 2 cups milk (for custard topping)
  • 3 egg yolks (for custard topping)
  • ⅓ cup sugar (for custard topping)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for custard topping)
  • pinch salt (for custard topping)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for custard topping)
  • 1 tbsp butter (for custard topping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them. Mix with lemon juice and spices; set aside.
  2. Combine flour and salt in a bowl, then mix in cold butter until crumbly. Gradually add ice water to form dough; chill for 30 minutes.
  3. Melt butter in a saucepan; stir in brown sugar and cream. Whisk in cornstarch until smooth; remove from heat.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough into a circle for the base and fill with the apple mixture and toffee sauce.
  5. Cover with another layer of dough and crimp edges. Brush with beaten egg wash.
  6. Bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
