Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brewed coffee or hot water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2/3 cup Nutella
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup Nutella (for garnish)
  • 14 hazelnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In one bowl, mix dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and brewed coffee or hot water.
  4. Combine wet and dry mixtures until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full and bake for approximately 18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While cooling, prepare the Nutella Buttercream by beating butter and Nutella together before adding powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Mix in cream and vanilla extract until fluffy.
  7. Once cooled, frost cupcakes generously with the buttercream and top each with a drizzle of Nutella and a hazelnut.
